Course

Parkirišče pred trgovino Rašice v Sr. Gameljnah-Rašica-Selo pri Vodicah-Povodje-Zg. Gameljne-Tacen-Vikrče-Zavrh pod Šmarno goro- Šmartno pod Šmarno goro-Parkirišče pred trgovino Rašice v Sr. Gameljnah

Up the slope to Rašica
The cycle route begins at the car park in front of the knitwear shop in Srednje Gameljne . This is an elongated village with the centre at the branching of the road to Rašica. The old church of St. Andrew is considered a local peculiarity. Turn to Rašica on the asphalt road which starts immediately ascending towards the village. Cycle on the asphalt road until the branching of the road in Rašica , , and then turn left to the forest macadam road. Rašica was the first Slovenian village to be burned down and its villagers deported by the occupying forces. This happened on 20 August 1941. The monument commemorates this tragic event. The road runs across the forest slope and ascends for a while. When you reach the highest point of the slope, the road descends through the forest in numerous turns, all the way to the village of Selo pri Vodicah . A monument to National Liberation War , commemorating the fighters of Rašiška četa Company who died in the battles against the occupying forces in September and October of 1941, is in the village.

Along the plain to Tacen
Turn left at the crossroads with the main road. There is a monument to National Liberation War in the memory of the breakthrough of Gorenjski odred Detachment on the right side of the road at the turning for Polje pri Vodicah.
The Church of St. Lucia is located above the Poljšak Stream along the southern side of Skaručna, a rather elongated village. The church was built between 1662 and 1665. It was renovated in Baroque style in 1744, while the paintings are from 1748. There is a plague sign from 1688 along the road .
The route below Šmarna gora turns to the main road Vodice-Šmartno, but you only cycle on it for a short time, as you soon turn to the fish farm on the left . There is a monument to Ivan Frank , a doyen of Slovenian organised fishing, at the entrance of the fish farm. From here on and until Zgornje Gameljne, cycle along the nicely maintained macadam road which runs at the edge of the forest and among pastures for a while. When you reach the first houses, the asphalt starts. Join the main road again, then cross the motorway Ljubljana-Kranj by an overpass and continue past the Church of St. Martin in Šmartno pod Šmarno goro to Tacen.

Back in a circle to Šmartno pod Šmarno goro and to the starting point
Tacen is a suburban and touristic settlement of Ljubljana and a starting point for the ascent to Šmarna gora, a steep solitary hill with two tops (Šmarno gora and Grmada), from where the view in all directions opens up. There is a Baroque church on the top of Šmarna gora, which was last decorated in 1729. The belfry is a remnant of the former anti-Turkish camp.
There is a world-wide famous kayaking track in Tacen on the Sava River, where World Cup Competitions take place. A monument to National Liberation War is on the right side on the way to Tacen. The monument is located at the site where the first partisan gun in Slovenia was fired; just a little further away is the Church of St. George from 1526.
Before the bridge over the Sava River, turn right and cycle along the sideway road past the Police Academy and to the main road, where you turn right to Vikrče . At the crossroads in Vikrče, turn towards Smlednik and cycle all the way to the turning for the village of Zavrh pod Šmarno goro . The board at the turning informs about Jakob Aljaž Museum which is located in the village . Although the village is not your destination of choice, you can still visit the birth house of this famous priest, composer and mountaineer. Jakob Aljaž was the initiator and builder of numerous Slovenian mountain stops in Triglav mountains, including the tower on the top of Triglav. A memorial plaque was mounted on the renovated birth house of Aljaž. Continue to the second turning and proceed to a cart track which leads below the village of Zavrh towards Šmartno pod Šmarno goro. The cart track is badly maintained at the beginning, but it soon becomes a well-maintained forest path, so you can quickly reach the first houses in Šmartno pod Šmarno goro . Cycle past the church and to the crossroads where you cross the main road and continue downhill past the line of houses below the motorway underpass, along the macadam road across the fields and meadows through the forest, then past the kennel society with the polygon for training dogs, and back to the starting point in Srednje Gameljne.
